PAINT ME A PICTURE

SPRING 2022

CONCEPT

Two painters find out their abilities amplify from the others’ physical touch. After building their whole careers around their relationship, they must figure out how to rebuild their careers- and lives - after their tumultuous breakup.

Glowing particle trails will be used to illustrate the magic that happens between the character and during moments of character development that makes painting magically appear.

For the overall look of the effects the director asked for the magical effects to be more stylized and not so much "tinker bell". So I wanted to create a more opaque style using instances instead of VDB volumes. I feel like this will give it a thicker more paint-like look

CLASS 5 PROGRESS

For class 5 we got the overall pipeline and general look of the FX down and approved by the director. Now that they have been approved we will work on doing more look development and pushing out higher quality renders. The goal for the midterm is to have better renders for the three shots we already have and have first passes for the other shots three shots. After midterm, the goal is to just refine. 

PIPELINE

I have been using a combination of velocity volumes and curves to drive the shape of the effect. 

A look inside my volume VOP. I combine the curve shape and a curl noise to get a custom velocity. 

For some shots, I source the particles from a volume trail and in other shots, I source the particles from an object. I then instance the particles and use attributes such as age and velocity to drive the size and color of the particles.
